In the picturesque town of Foster, Rhode Island, there was a home with a backyard that held immense potential. The homeowner had several unsafe decks and under-utilized spaces, as well as a pressing need to upgrade safety measures for aging family members. Keeping the rustic aesthetic of the property was also important for the family, and thus began our quest for a balance between safety, functionality, and beauty.
Our first step was crafting a comprehensive design that cohesively integrated all the deck spaces. The existing decks, which had considerably deteriorated over time, needed more than a facelift. We undertook a complete demolition of the existing structures and rebuilt everything, beginning with sturdy footings and pressure-treated framing and finalizing with the most durable composite decking and railings on the market.
A covered pergola was incorporated, providing shade and protection from the rain. To enhance accessibility and safety for all, especially the elderly, secondary ADA handrails were fitted to the most frequently used stair railings. We also installed gates to improve safety and control access to the swimming pool area. Finally, we built an under-deck storage area to optimize the use of space and store pool equipment.
This pool deck transformation story in Foster, Rhode Island, stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design and careful execution. We transformed an underutilized space into a beautiful, functional, and safe outdoor living area, seamlessly blending modern safety features with a rustic aesthetic. We believe that every home holds the potential for such transformation.
